जो संहाराच्या वेळी सर्वांना आपल्यात सामावून घेतो, तो शर्वः. विघटन, समाप्ती आणि पुनर्निर्मितीच्या चक्रात संहारतत्त्व म्हणून तो कार्य करतो. भयावहतेतूनही विश्वनियमन करणारी दिव्यता या नावात आहे.

**Etymological note<br> ‘Śarvaḥ’ is also a name of Śiva (Rudra), and its appearance here in the Vishnu Sahasranama is significant. It affirms that the power of dissolution — attributed in the trimūrti theology to Śiva — is ultimately a power of Viṣṇu. The great commentator Parāśara Bhaṭṭar explains that Viṣṇu as Śarvaḥ destroys (‘śṛ’ = to destroy) the accumulated sins and sorrows of His devotees. He is the destroyer not of the world in a nihilistic sense but of the bondage of saṃsāra.
